Smiley states that he is aware that Esterhase has been posing as a Russian mole, with Polyakov as his handler, ostensibly in order to provide cover for Merlin's emissary Polyakov. So Smiley has not retired with dignity, but rather has been ousted for backing a jaded horse. Each 'Tinker' character has a rich interior life, extending backwards into the past, fanning out behind them. In fact, Tinker, Tailor offers the seductive fantasy of entering a secret world, one imagined with alluring richness. Tomorrow, if he was lucky, he might spot land; a peaceful little desert island, for instance.

Then there was a third character who mostly made cameo appearances and was clearly unimportant, but we spend time in his head too. There is no question that John Le Carré is a brilliant writer, and his plots are peppered with surprise spirals throughout each novel. This novel is almost as complex as a Russian novel. A few months ago a stylish looking British adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was released in theaters and I was intrigued. Read the book then watch the movie and if you want more watch the mini-series.

Instead, this is a book for readers interested in an unusual spy novel. When you read a book like this, you get the distinct impression that the author has lived this life. It reflects our concerns for our outward, external, social institutions and also treats the needs of our inward self; the psychology of the isolated citizen. See first note about becoming a really shitty reader. There was nothing dishonourable in not being blown about by every little modern wind. Le Carré's world is perhaps as far from the glamorous cosmos of James Bond and his followers as it's possible to be. I liked Smiley a lot, but I would hate to work with him.

Since Control died shortly after his forced retirement, Guillam and Smiley are the only former top operatives still alive who are above suspicion. The great Alec Guinness stars as George Smiley, an honorable spy chief who's been ousted after a shakeup in British intelligence — known as The Circus. For reasons of vanity he wore no hat, believing rightly that hats made him ridiculous. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. But, the most frustrating aspect of John le Carré books for me that is writing is purposely convoluted and obscure for one reason -- to confuse everything and anything that is happening so. Watching again, I found it every bit as gripping as the first three times I watched it. LeCarre has populated agency with well drawn, diverse characters.

Alcoholic, but with an excellent memory. It's about having a purpose in life. There tons of characters that pop in and out, these characters are never properly introduced to the reader, they are never explained, so you, the reader, must figure out who they are, what role they play in the story and why they are important. One of his loyal followers Peter Guillam gives us some insight. For the first time I believe readers were treated to something quite new. Overall I found the book absorbing.

What I got was a dankly bitter tale of betrayal ending at the Berlin Wall. Was this transition described in one of the other Smiley books? The other characters were great too. There is a really thin line between us and them. Also, having worked in espionage himself, le Carré is able to get the atmosphere right. LeCarre's semi-Dickensian technique radiated a new depth to the traditional spy story in a way that pays faith entirely to itself--to LeCarre himself as an author, a citizen, and a man and to his genre of choice. And, at the same time, he's also realized that his wife is sleeping around.
